Steve McClaren: A Career Built Around Elite Football Environments
Steve McClaren’s career has been shaped by elite standards, high-pressure leadership and top-level football performance.
He is widely recognised for his time as Assistant Manager to Sir Alex Ferguson at Manchester United, where he was part of the staff during the club’s historic 1998/99 Treble-winning season, winning the Premier League, FA Cup and UEFA Champions League. That period placed McClaren inside one of the most successful and demanding football environments in world sport.
Working alongside Sir Alex Ferguson, and within a dressing room full of leaders such as Roy Keane, Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes, David Beckham, Peter Schmeichel and others, gave McClaren a front-row seat to the behaviours, standards and mentality required to win consistently.
But Steve McClaren’s career success extends far beyond his role at Manchester United.
As a manager in his own right, he led Middlesbrough to their first major trophy, winning the League Cup in 2004, and later guided the club to the UEFA Cup Final in 2006. His work at Middlesbrough remains one of the most important periods in the club’s modern history, combining strong recruitment, clear leadership, high standards and a culture capable of supporting experienced international players.
McClaren also managed the England national team, taking on one of the most scrutinised roles in world football. He later achieved major success in the Netherlands with FC Twente, leading the club to the Eredivisie title, a historic achievement that showed his ability to adapt, lead and win outside English football.
His career has also included roles with Derby County, Newcastle United, Manchester United, Jamaica and other high-level football environments. Across each role, his experiences have given him a deep understanding of coaching, leadership, player management, culture, pressure and performance.
Episode #2: What Modern Coaching Really Demands
This episode of the ISSPF Soccer Insights Podcast is not simply a reflection on Steve McClaren’s career. It is a detailed conversation about what coaching really demands in the modern game.
Modern coaching is about more than tactics, session plans and formations. The best coaches must now be able to lead people, connect departments, communicate clearly, manage pressure, build trust, influence behaviour and create environments where players can perform.
Steve speaks openly about the difference between delivering a training session and leading a football club environment. His message is clear: coaches must understand people as much as they understand the game.
The episode explores how coaches create buy-in, how they manage big personalities, how they build standards that last, and how they protect the culture when standards begin to drop. For any coach working in grassroots, academy, semi-professional, professional or elite football, these insights are highly relevant.
Culture Is Behaviour
One of the strongest themes from the conversation is Steve McClaren’s view on culture.
Culture is often spoken about in football, but Steve explains it in a very clear and practical way. Culture is not a slogan. It is not a motivational poster. It is not something written in a pre-season document and then forgotten.
Culture is behaviour.
It is what players do every day. It is how staff communicate. It is how people train, prepare, recover, compete and respond to setbacks. It is what leaders accept, what they challenge and what they are willing to protect.
Drawing on his time at Manchester United under Sir Alex Ferguson, Steve explains how standards were driven from the top but reinforced daily by leaders within the dressing room. Roy Keane is discussed as a key example of a player who protected non-negotiables and demanded accountability from those around him.
For coaches listening to the episode, this is one of the biggest takeaways. Culture is not created by words alone. It is created through repeated behaviours, consistent demands and leadership that refuses to allow standards to slip.
Lessons from Manchester United, Middlesbrough and International Football
The episode provides powerful insight into several major football environments.
From Manchester United, Steve reflects on elite standards, daily expectations and the importance of leaders inside the dressing room. The discussion highlights why successful teams are not built only on talent, but on behaviours, consistency and accountability.
From Middlesbrough, Steve shares lessons on building a culture strong enough to support major players. During his time at the club, Middlesbrough recruited high-profile names such as Mark Viduka, Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink, Gaizka Mendieta, George Boateng and Gareth Southgate. The key message is that recruitment is only one part of the process. A club must already have a strong environment if big personalities are going to enter, respect it and thrive within it.
From international football with Jamaica, Steve discusses spirit, togetherness, belief and game management. These reflections show that football is never only about tactics. Game plans matter, but so do energy, timing, emotional control, decision-making and the ability to respond to the flow of the game.
The New Wave of English Coaches
Another important area of the conversation focuses on the new generation of English coaches.
Steve discusses coaches such as Liam Rosenior & Eddie Howe, reflecting on what the modern game now requires. Young coaches must be tactically prepared, but they must also be authentic, adaptable and able to connect with players, staff, boards and supporters.
Steve also reflects on his time working with Wayne Rooney and Liam Rosenior at Derby County, discussing coaching philosophy, personality, communication and the importance of developing your own identity as a coach.
For aspiring coaches, this part of the episode is particularly valuable. It reinforces the idea that coach development is not just about collecting drills or copying tactical trends. It is about understanding who you are, what you stand for, how you communicate and how you influence the environment around you.
